Wheeling was first settled in 1816 by Daniel Boone and his family on land that had been donated by John Randolph of Roanoke County, Virginia. The town was incorporated as a village in 1825 and as a city in 1865. It became known as "The Queen City" because it was home to many wealthy families who built fine homes and businesses downtown. Many of these buildings are still standing today and make up part of the historic downtown district.

Wheeling's economy has changed over the years from being primarily based on manufacturing to being more diversified with services such as healthcare and finance playing larger roles today. However, one thing that has not changed is Wheeling's love for its beautiful architecture and rich history which makes it a popular tourist destination year-round.
