Hazleton is the county seat of Luzerne County and is situated along the Susquehanna River. The city's name derives from early settler John Hazleton who purchased 640 acres (259 ha) of land in 1786 from William Penn. Hazleton became a borough on October 9, 1845 and was chartered as a city on April 11, 1853.
