Manilla is a small town located in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Manilla is known for its real estate market and has been called "the most active real estate market in Indiana." The median home price in Manilla was $137,000 in July 2016.

The history of Manilla can be traced back to 1836 when the first settler, James Hogg, arrived from Tennessee. In 1851, the town was platted by Moses Dickson and named after Manuela Villa de Manila, wife of Spanish Governor-General Don José de la Gándara y Sotomayor. By 1880 there were about 200 residents living in Manilla.

The early economy of Manilla was based on agriculture and livestock farming. However, with the arrival of the railroad in 1881 and increased industrialization throughout Indiana during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Manilla began to experience a period of growth and prosperity. This growth continued into the 20th century with new businesses opening up including a flour mill, a foundry, two banks (one of which became First National Bank), two hotels (the Palace Hotel and the Commercial Hotel), two newspapers (the Daily News and The Herald), a creamery, several stores (including an ice cream store), an opera house/theater company (Manila Opera House Company), as well as several churches (including First Presbyterian Church).

However, with the onset of World War II there were significant changes for Manilla as many residents enlisted or were drafted into military service. As a result of this war-time activity there was an increase in housing construction as servicemen needed homes after returning from overseas duty. Additionally, with increased production at factories throughout Vanderburgh County due to wartime demand for munitions and supplies, wages grew which helped to support additional businesses in town such as restaurants and retail stores.

After World War II ended things began to slow down for Manilla as many businesses closed down or moved away due to competition from larger cities such as Indianapolis or Louisville which had emerged as major commercial hubs during this time period. However, despite these challenges there has been renewed interest in Manilla's real estate market over recent years due to its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis or Louisville while also maintaining its small town feel thanks to its lack of large chain retailers or fast food restaurants compared to more urban areas. This renewed interest has led to record breaking prices for homes in Manilla including one home that sold for $1 million dollars in 2016 which is more than triple what it cost just 10 years ago!

As you can see from this brief history of real estate development in Manilla it has always been an important community both economically and culturally speaking; however it remains relatively unknown outside of Indiana because it lacks large corporate headquarters or major tourist attractions like amusement parks or golf courses like some other towns within Vanderburgh County do have.
