Wheatfield is a small town located in the northwestern part of Indiana. The population of Wheatfield was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Wheatfield is located in Porter County and has a land area of only 2.5 square miles. The town's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing.
The history of Wheatfield can be traced back to 1836 when James Fenton platted the town site on land that he had purchased from the government. The first settlers arrived in 1837 and began to build homes and businesses. In 1840, a post office was established and by 1850, Wheatfield had a population of 350 people.
During the late 1800s, wheat farming became increasingly important to the local economy as demand for flour increased worldwide. However, during World War II, wheat production was diverted to support military efforts and by 1950, wheat farming had all but disappeared from Wheatfield's landscape.
In recent years, Wheatfield has begun to experience a resurgence in its economy as it becomes known for its agricultural heritage and unique small-town atmosphere. Today, there are several businesses operating in Wheatfield including a bakery, hardware store, restaurant/barbershop combo, gas station/convenience store, hair salon/daycare center and two banks - one independent bank and one commercial bank - both of which are locally owned and operated. Additionally, there are several residential properties available for sale or lease including single-family homes as well as apartments complexes which have been built specifically for rental purposes
Wheatfield is also home to two public schools - an elementary school (grades K-6) which serves students from within the town limits while high school students attend schools in nearby Porter County; and an alternative high school (grades 7-12) which serves students from throughout northwestern Indiana In addition to public education services provided by the schools district , residents have access to numerous other amenities such as shopping opportunities at local stores such as Walmart or Target; medical services provided by Porter Memorial Hospital; recreational opportunities such as fishing at nearby Lake Monroe or skiing at nearby Sugar Ridge Ski Resort;and various other attractions that can be found within close proximity such as Appleton City Hall or downtown Fort Wayne .
