Avoca is a small town located in Sac County, Iowa. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Avoca is located at 41°5′4″N 91°59′0″W.
Avoca was founded in 1858 by George and Clarissa (Phelps) Adams. The town was named for the Avoca estate in County Wicklow, Ireland, where George Adams had been born. The first settler in Avoca was John A. Houghton, who arrived in 1857.
The town's early economy depended on agriculture and livestock farming. In the early 1900s, however, Avoca began to experience growth as a result of its location near Interstate 80 and the railroad line that ran through town. Today, Avoca is primarily a residential community with a small commercial center.
