The city was founded in 1836 and named for Burlington, Vermont. The first settlers arrived in 1837 and built a log cabin on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River. The town grew slowly at first; it did not become an official city until 1853. In that year, Burlington's first mayor, James Paulding, renamed the town after Burlington, Vermont to promote its growth.
Today, Burlington is a thriving community with many businesses and attractions. The city has a number of parks and recreational areas as well as a variety of shopping options. It is also home to several colleges and universities including Drake University and Iowa State University- Ames Campus.
