Leighton is a small town located in southeastern Iowa. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Leighton is located in Jefferson County and has a small downtown area with a few businesses and restaurants. The majority of the town's commerce takes place outside of the downtown area on nearby highways.

The history of Leighton can be traced back to 1856 when James Hogg and his family settled on 160 acres northeast of present day Leighton. The town was founded in 1892 when the railroad was extended to that point. At its peak, Leighton had a population of over 2,000 people and boasted two banks, four churches, three newspapers, two schools, several businesses and an opera house. However, due to the decline in agriculture throughout Iowa during the late 20th century and early 21st century, Leighton's population has steadily decreased to its current level.

Real estate in Leighton is primarily composed of residential properties situated along major highways such as US Route 61 and Interstate 35. There are also a few commercial properties located within the downtown area near Main Street.
