The town of Northwood was founded in 1868 by George W. and Martha A. (Snyder) Pomeroy. The Pomeroys were early settlers of Johnson County and were among the first to arrive in Northwood. George W. Pomeroy was a carpenter by trade and he built many of the early buildings in Northwood, including the town's first schoolhouse.
Today, much of what makes Northwood unique remains unchanged since its founding over 150 years ago: its small-town feel, its close proximity to nature (including several parks), and its diverse array of businesses and attractions that draw visitors from around the state and country. Some of these businesses include a bank, grocery store, hardware store, restaurant, barbershop/beauty salon, funeral home, post office, gas station/convenience store/grocery store combo, doctor's office/medical clinic (with satellite imaging services), law offices (two), real estate agency (three), library (four branches), fire department with ambulance service and two stations equipped with aerial ladder trucks for emergency response purposes as well as numerous other smaller businesses that make up what has come to be known as "The Village at Northwood".
