Hickory, KY

Hickory is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. The population was just over 10,000 as of the 2010 census. Hickory is known for its natural resources, including coal, timber, and oil. Hickory has been a center of commerce since the early days of the American Revolution.

The history of real estate in Hickory can be traced back to 1792 when John Rowan built a cabin on land he had purchased from James Robertson. Rowan was one of the first settlers in what would become Hickory County. In 1801, Rowan built a sawmill on the banks of the Holston River and began to trade goods with settlers in nearby counties. The mill became one of the largest in Kentucky and helped to spur growth in Hickory County.

In 1819, William Hays established a store near Rowan's mill and began to sell goods to settlers throughout eastern Kentucky. Hays became one of the most successful merchants in eastern Kentucky and played an important role in developing Hickory County into an agricultural powerhouse. In 1825, Hays built a mansion on what is now known as Main Street in downtown Hickory. The mansion still stands today and is used as office space by local businesses
