Jackson was founded on May 1, 1798 by General James Robertson and Colonel John Floyd as Fort Henry. It was named for Andrew Jackson, then United States Senator from Tennessee and future seventh president of the United States. The fort served as a waypoint for traders travelling between Louisville and Nashville on the Cumberland Road (now U.S. Route 31). In 1818, during Indian Removal, Jackson became home to an encampment of Cherokee Indians led by Chief William Rogers who were relocated from their homeland in present-day Georgia to what would become Oklahoma Territory following passage of the Indian Removal Act by Congress in 1830.
In 1832, after years of litigation over land titles in what would become Jackson County, Judge John Overton declared that all land within Jackson's corporate limits belonged to James Robertson (the fort's namesake) and his heirs-in-law pursuant to an agreement Robertson had made with Colonel John Floyd nearly two centuries earlier while they were serving together in Spain's army during the American Revolutionary War; this ruling effectively ended any legal disputes over land titles within Jackson's corporate limits and paved the way for rapid growth and development within town limits during ensuing decades.(see History section below)
The first railroad line reached Jackson on October 25th 1853 when it was connected to Louisville via trackage rights over what would later become known as The Big Four Bridge across Horse Creek just north of downtown.(see Transportation section below)
