Paducah was founded in 1798 by James Paducah and named for his friend, the French ambassador to England, Jean-Baptiste du Val-de-Coucy. Paducah was incorporated as a town in 1819 and as a city in 1892. It is one of Kentucky's oldest cities and its downtown district has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
