Metairie is a suburb of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is located on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River and has a population of about 120,000 people. Metairie was founded in 1727 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville and named for his patron, Marie Antoinette. The area was originally inhabited by the Chitimacha Native Americans.

The first European settlement in Metairie was established in 1727 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. The area was originally inhabited by the Chitimacha Native Americans. In 1803, General James Wilkinson purchased land in what is now Metairie from the Chitimacha Nation for $1,500. He built a plantation on this land and named it Wilkinson Plantation after himself.

In 1825, Pierre Lafitte purchased Wilkinson Plantation and renamed it Lafitte Plantation after himself. Lafitte was a pirate who had been captured and imprisoned on an island off the coast of Haiti before being released in 1815 and moving to New Orleans. In 1824, he founded a pirate republic on Terrebonne Parish near New Orleans that lasted until 1829 when he was captured and executed by Spanish authorities at Havana Bay.

In 1840, John McDonogh bought Lafitte Plantation from its last owner, Pierre Lacoste d'Iberville II (son of Pierre Lacoste d'Iberville). McDonogh developed Metairie as a residential suburb outside of New Orleans proper and laid out streets that still exist today (such as Jefferson Highway). He also donated land for St Charles Borromeo Church (now Our Lady Queen Of Peace Catholic Church) which opened in 1850.

In 1870-1871, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, violence erupted between white Republicans who supported Reconstruction policies and African Americans who were seeking voting rights and equal treatment under the law. This violence culminated in the Battle of Liberty Place fought on October 24th 1870 between Republican militia forces led by Major General Benjamin Flanders (a former U S Army officer)and an armed force led by Confederate General Pemberton which ended with Flanders's victory but at great cost: over 800 dead or wounded soldiers on both sides combined with over 3200 arrests including many prominent African Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers etc.. This event effectively ended Reconstruction in Louisiana although some limited civil rights reforms would be enacted through federal legislation over time.. In 1880-1881 James Hogg purchased Lafitte Plantation from McDonogh's heirs; he developed it into one of America's most opulent estates during his ownership which lasted until his death in 1917.. Hogg also donated land for Holy Cross Catholic Church which opened in 1886.. In 1917 Joseph E Kennedy Sr., son of Irish immigrant John F Kennedy bought Hogg's estate; he later sold it to developers who turned it into Metairie's first suburban shopping mall – Galleria Mall – which opened in 1962.. Today Metairie is home to several large office complexes including those belonging to ExxonMobil Corporation (formerly Mobil Oil Corporation), Entergy Corporation , Anheuser Busch InBev NV , Prudential Financial Incorporated , Wells Fargo & Company , J D Power & Associates Incorporated . There are also numerous smaller businesses including restaurants such as Brennan's Irish Pub & Restaurant ; hair salons such as Hair One ; clothing stores such as Lulus ; jewelers such as Kay Jewelers ; toy stores like Toys "R" Us . There are also several large apartment complexes including TownePlace Suites By Marriott ; Courtyard By Marriott ; Residence Inn By Marriott .
