Delmar, MD

Delmar, MD is a town located in the eastern portion of Montgomery County, Maryland. The population was 21,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town was founded in 1792 and named for Pierre Samuel Delmar, a French diplomat who served as Minister to Russia under Napoleon Bonaparte. The town was incorporated in 1859.

The economy of Delmar is based on retail sales and services. There are also several manufacturing plants located within the town limits. The largest employer in Delmar is Lockheed Martin which employs 1,500 people locally. Other major employers include JB Hunt Transport Services and Medtronic plc which both have 500+ employees each.

There are a number of schools located within Delmar including two high schools ( Delmar High School and Stonewall Jackson High School), four middle schools (Oak Hill Middle School, Piney Branch Middle School, River Run Middle School, and Heritage Hills Middle School), and ten elementary schools (Cedarbrook Elementary School, Deer Run Elementary School, Glenarden Elementary School, Greenbrier Elementary School, Hickory Ridge Elementary School, Laurel Hill Elementary school , Maplewood Elementary school , Meadowbrook Elementary school , Northwoods Primary Center , Pineside Primary Center , Quail Hollow Primary Center ).

As well as these public schools there are also three private schools: Saint John's Episcopal Church Academy (K-8), Holy Family Catholic Church Academy (K-8), and Saint Anne's Episcopal Church PreSchool/Kindergarten (3 years old – 5 years old).

In addition to its public education system there are also several colleges located within Delmar including Bowie State University which has an enrollment of over 10 thousand students; George Washington University which has an enrollment of over 8 thousand students; Eastern Mennonite College which has an enrollment of over 2 thousand students; Montgomery College which has an enrollment of over 10 thousand students; Northern Virginia Community College which has an enrollment of over 30 thousand students; Towson University which has an enrollment of over 20 thousand students; and American University which has an enrollment exceeding 12 thousand students
