The town of Indian Head was founded in 1727 by the Maryland General Assembly as a trading post on the Patapsco River. The town's name comes from the Native American tribe known as the Piscataway who were living along the river at that time. In 1777, during the American Revolution, British forces burned down most of the town. However, it was rebuilt and became an important shipping port for tobacco and other products.
