Jessup is a town in Harford County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. Jessup is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Baltimore and 15 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.
The town was founded in 1792 by General John Eager Howard and named for his father-in-law, Colonel James Jessup. The first settlers were farmers from the Eastern Shore of Maryland who came to the area to grow tobacco and wheat. In 1814, a sawmill was built on the Potomac River and Jessup became an important center for lumber production. During the Civil War, Confederate troops occupied Jessup but did not damage or destroy any buildings. After the war, Jessup grew rapidly as a result of its location near major transportation routes (the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad passed through town in 1871) and its proximity to Washington D.C., which became home to many federal government employees in the late 19th century.
Today, Jessup is an affluent town with a diverse economy that includes high-tech businesses and healthcare facilities. The town's main industries are health care services (including hospitals), professional services (including law firms), retail sales (especially furniture stores), and manufacturing (including automotive parts).
