Libertytown, MD

Libertytown is a small town located in Harford County, Maryland. The population of Libertytown was 2,853 as of the 2010 census. Libertytown is home to the historic district of Libertytown which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The town is also home to the Harford County Fairgrounds and the Harford County Agricultural Museum.

The history of Libertytown can be traced back to 1727 when George Washington and his troops passed through on their way to take possession of Fort Necessity. The community that grew up around this fort was first known as "Washington's Camp." In 1748, a group of settlers from Cecil County founded what would become known as "Liberty Town." The name "Liberty Town" commemorated the American Revolution victory at Saratoga and reflected the town's belief that it had been given its charter by General George Washington himself.

In 1814, Libertytown became part of Harford County when it was created from parts of Baltimore and Cecil counties. By 1840, there were already several businesses in Libertytown including a blacksmith shop, two stores, a gristmill, and a sawmill. In 1851, an academy was established in Libertytown which would later become Harford Community College. In 1871, the railroad arrived in Libertytown which led to an increase in business activity as farmers began selling their products into Baltimore and other nearby towns.

Today, much has changed since 1871 when only 25% of residents worked outside the home; today over 60% work outside the home due to increased economic opportunities brought about by new technology and globalization. Despite these changes however, many businesses in Libertytown continue to operate family-owned and operated businesses which are important contributors to the local economy. These include: B&B Inn (established 1978), Biggs Hardware (established 1922), D'Angelo's Pizza (established 1980), Fenton's Bakery (established 1937), J & R Auto Sales (established 1966), K & L Painting Contractors (established 1978), Miller Tire & Wheel Service (established 1975), Piggly Wiggly grocery store (opened 1948), Red Lobster restaurant (opened 1968).

The retail sector continues to be an important part of the economy with several large chain stores located within close proximity such as Walmart Supercenter (opened 1992) and Target store(opened 1994).
