The town was founded in 1792 by General Samuel Owings and named for him. Owings is home to the historic Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, which are open to the public year-round. The estate has been owned by George Washington's descendants since 1799.
In addition to its historic attractions, Owings is also home to several shopping centers and restaurants, as well as a large number of single family homes and apartments. The town's schools are among the best in Maryland, with excellent test scores consistently ranking it among the top five percent of all schools statewide.
