The town was founded in 1792 by General James McHenry and named for his wife, Elizabeth Woodbine. The town's early economy was based on tobacco production and milling. In 1835, a railroad line was built through Woodbine connecting Baltimore with Washington D.C., which stimulated further development of the town as a commercial center.
