Auburndale, MA

Auburndale is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 17,821 at the 2010 census. Auburndale is home to the University of Massachusetts Amherst and its main campus.

The town was first settled in 1639 as part of Charlestown and was officially incorporated in 1713. Auburndale's name comes from the Native American word for "place of beaver". The area now occupied by Auburndale was once part of a large tract of land called the Beaver Meadow, which included what are now Arlington and Belmont. The first recorded settler in what would become Auburndale was John Winthrop, who arrived in 1630 on the ship Arbella with his fellow Puritan colonists. Winthrop purchased land from the Wampanoag sachem Metacom and founded Charlestown upon his arrival; Auburndale began as a small settlement adjacent to Charlestown.

Auburndale played an important role in early American history; it served as the site of several pivotal battles during King Philip's War (1675-1676), including the Battle of Bunker Hill and Battle of Lexington and Concord. After these conflicts, which resulted in England losing control over most of New England, Auburndale became an important center for trade and commerce; it became known as "the Manchester of America" due to its thriving textile industry. In addition to textiles, other industries that flourished in Auburndale during this time include shoe manufacturing and furniture making.
