Bridgewater is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,827 at the 2010 census. Bridgewater is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area.
The town was first settled in 1630 as part of the Plymouth Colony and was officially incorporated on October 12, 1713. Bridgewater is known for its colonial architecture and for its many historic homes and estates. The town's economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and manufacturing, but it has also developed into a leading technology center with several high-tech companies headquartered in or near the town.
Bridgewater is home to two universities: Bridgewater State University (BSU) and New England College (NEC). BSU is a public university with over 2,000 students while NEC is a private liberal arts college with approximately 1,500 students. There are also several other colleges and universities located within commuting distance of Bridgewater including Emerson College, Northeastern University, Simmons College and Wheelock College.
The primary transportation artery through Bridgewater is Interstate 95 which runs north-south through the center of town connecting Boston to Providence Rhode Island to the east and Connecticut to the west. Route 3A runs east-west through central Bridgewater connecting I-95 with Routes 28 & 116 leading north to Northampton and south to Fall River respectively. Route 27 connects I-95 with Routes 3 & 118 leading west to Plymouth County Airport via Marshfield and east towards New Bedford
