Brookline is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area.

The town was first settled in 1630 as part of Charlestown. In 1723, it was set off and incorporated as a separate town by an act of the Massachusetts General Court. The town's name comes from its location near Brookline Village (now a neighborhood within Boston), which was named for the brooks that ran through the area.

In 1810, Brookline became one of the first towns in America to have a railroad station. The current station building dates from 1875 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1892, Brookline became home to Harvard University's first undergraduate dormitory, Eliot House (now known as Eliot House at Harvard College).

Today, Brookline remains an affluent community with many historic homes and buildings dating back to colonial times.
