Chatham, MA

Chatham is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area.

The town of Chatham was first settled in 1638 as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The town was named after Chatham, Kent, England. The first settler in Chatham was John Eliot who purchased land from the Native Americans in 1638.

In 1775 during the American Revolution, British troops occupied Chatham and held it until they were forced to retreat from Boston in 1776.

During the 19th century, Chatham became an industrial center due to its location on the Mystic River and its access to water power. Factories that operated in Chatham during this time include a cotton mill owned by Eli Whitney and a shoe factory owned by Charles Hormel.
