Hingham is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 24,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area.
The town of Hingham was first settled in 1630 by John Winthrop and his followers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The area now known as Hingham was then part of Charlestown and included what are now Weymouth and Quincy. In 1635, Winthrop purchased of land from the Wampanoag sachem Massasoit for 60 pounds sterling (approximately $10,000 in today's currency). This tract became known as the "Great Purchase".
In 1638, Winthrop founded the first English colony in North America on this land at what would become Boston. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1643 had a population of 1,200 people. In recognition of his role in founding Boston and building its first colonial government, Governor John Winthrop was elected governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1649.
In 1775 during the American Revolution, Hingham played an important role as a supply base for British forces fighting against patriot forces throughout New England. After being captured by General George Washington's troops on July 3rd 1775 while attempting to evacuate British troops from Charlestown Heights (now Beacon Hill), Major General John Burgoyne decided to retreat south through Hingham instead of continuing his campaign into New England proper where he might have met more resistance. As a result, much damage was done to homes and businesses in Hingham during this time - most notably when British troops burned down several buildings on Main Street on their way out (see Battle of Bunker Hill).
Today, much has changed since those early days when Hingham was just beginning to grow into its present form as one of southeastern Massachusetts' most vibrant communities with a rich history dating back over 350 years! While many aspects of life here remain largely unchanged - including its close-knit community feel - there has been an influx over recent years of new businesses and residents that have helped to revitalize many parts of town including Main Street which has seen significant investment both from local businesses and developers alike. With excellent schools (including two private schools ranked among America's top 100), plenty to do both day-and-night (including world-renowned beaches just minutes away), ample shopping opportunities along Route 1A/Interstate 95 (the town boasts more than 50 retail stores), excellent public transportation options (including two commuter rail stations within walking distance) ... it truly is no wonder why so many people call Higham home!
