Hull is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 18,890 at the 2010 census. Hull is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area.
The first Europeans to visit Hull were the Pilgrims in 1620. The town was first settled in 1630 as part of Charlestown and was known as "Newtowne". In 1775, during the American Revolution, Hull was captured by British forces and held for several months until it was recaptured by American troops.
In 1812, Hull became an independent town within Middlesex County. It grew rapidly due to its location on the Middlesex Canal which made transportation and trade easy. In 1850, there were 1,500 residents living in Hull; by 1870 this number had increased to 10,000.
During the late 19th century and early 20th century there were many changes happening in Hull. Many new businesses were opening up including mills and factories which created jobs for many people in the town. Additionally, new housing developments were being built which helped to increase the population even more.
By 1940 there were 23,000 residents living in Hull; however this number decreased slightly over time due to World War II and other factors such as suburbanization. However, by 1990 there had been a resurgence of growth with 31,000 residents living in Hull; this has continued into present day with 36,000 residents currently residing in Hull according to Census data from 2010.
