The town was first settled in 1634 as part of the Shawmut colony and was officially incorporated in 1753. Newbury is known for its Georgian architecture and for its many prestigious private schools including Phillips Academy Andover, Choate Rosemary Hall and Deerfield Academy. The town's economy has been based largely on its role as a center of the publishing industry with companies such as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Farrar Straus Giroux and WGBH-TV having their headquarters here. In recent years Newbury has seen an influx of young professionals due to its proximity to Boston and other urban areas.
