North Chelmsford is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 36,814. North Chelmsford is home to The Prudential Center and Chelmsford High School.
The land that North Chelmsford now occupies was first settled in 1660 by Thomas Dudley and his son-in-law John Winthrop. Dudley was one of the original signers of the Mayflower Compact and served as Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1692 to 1696. In 1701, North Chelmsford was incorporated as a separate town from Chelmsford. The town's name is derived from the Old English word "ceolm" meaning "a valley."
The early economy of North Chelmsford was based on agriculture and milling. In 1820, textile mills were established in the town and began to produce textiles for both domestic and international markets. By 1900, there were twelve textile mills operating in North Chelmsford; however, by 1990 only two remained operational.
