Rowley is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,821 at the 2010 census. Rowley is home to the historic Rowley Village and the new Rowley Town Center.
The area that now comprises Rowley was first settled by Europeans in 1635 as part of Chelmsford Township. The town was officially incorporated on March 4, 1793 from portions of Chelmsford and Billerica townships. The name " Rowley" is derived from the Old English word "hrægl", meaning a hill or mound.
In 1892, the Boston and Maine Railroad built a line through what would become Rowley Village. This spurred development of businesses and homes along this route, which became known as Main Street. In 1938, Main Street was widened to accommodate traffic from Route 128 (the present-day Massachusetts Turnpike). This expansion also created an open space in front of the train station that became known as Station Square.
In 1984, Main Street underwent another renovation which restored its original character and added sidewalks along both sides of the street. This project also created new storefronts and replaced century-old windows with new ones that matched the architecture of surrounding buildings.
Today, Rowley continues to grow thanks to its close proximity to Boston and its many amenities: shopping at downtown Billerica; dining options in nearby Chelmsford; outdoor activities such as hiking trails and skiing slopes in nearby North Andover; access to I-90; easy commute into Boston via Route 128 or Route 9; public transportation available including buses running directly into downtown Boston's South Station (and thence throughout Greater Boston).
The town's recent growth has led to some issues: for example, parking has become increasingly scarce near commercial areas due to increased demand from customers who want to patronize local businesses; furthermore there are concerns about how this growth will affect infrastructure such as roads and utilities – particularly given that many new residents are not yet registered voters or property owners who may be less likely than others to support tax increases or other measures necessary for maintaining infrastructure levels currently enjoyed by residents of older communities like Rowley Village which have been around for decades or even centuries (elements like sidewalks being installed only recently). Nevertheless overall opinion seems positive about current trends – especially given that much of what makes living in Rowleys so special can still be found within easy reach even if one lives outside of town limits: namely open space including farmland just minutes away where one can enjoy country walks or horseback riding; scenic views overlooking rolling hills dotted with farmssteads from any location within town limits; small-town feel coupled with all the conveniences offered by larger cities like Boston only minutes away by car or bus ride (or even flight!).
