Russell is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area.
The town was first settled in 1635 as part of Charlestown and was officially incorporated in 1713. Russell became an independent town in 1892. The name Russell is derived from a settler's name, Richard Russell, who purchased land from the Native Americans in 1635.
