The city of Salem was first settled in 1636 as part of the town of Ipswich. It was incorporated as a city in 1788 and named for Sir William Phips, an early benefactor of the colony. Salem is home to the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS), which has been located in its current building since 1892.
