Stoneham was first settled in 1635 as part of Charlestown. The area now known as Stoneham was once part of a tract granted to John Winthrop in 1629 by the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1775, during the American Revolution, British forces burned down much of Stoneham's colonial-era buildings. After the war ended, new homes were built and businesses opened.
