The city was founded in 1805 by General Moses Brown and named for Bath, England, where Brown had been stationed as a soldier during the American Revolution. The first settler arrived in 1807. The city's early economy was based on agriculture and manufacturing; however, it has since become a center for retail sales and services. Bath is home to Eastern Michigan University and several other colleges and universities, including Calvin College, Central Michigan University, Hillsdale College, Oakland Community College, Saint John's University School of Law (SJU), Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSU) and Western Michigan University (WMU).
