Clawson's Home Prices Continue to Rise

The city of Clawson is located in the southeastern corner of Oakland County, Michigan. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. Clawson is a suburb of Detroit and has been growing rapidly in recent years as a bedroom community for Detroiters.

The city's economy is based largely on its strong automotive industry presence and its proximity to the major metropolitan area. However, there has been a recent surge in residential development as well, with many new homes being built near the city's commercial areas and parks.

Clawson has a long history dating back to 1818 when General William Hull led an expedition into what is now Oakland County. The city was formally platted in 1825 and named for Isaac Clawson, one of the original proprietors of the town site. The first businesses opened up in early 1826, including a general store, blacksmith shop, hotel and tavern. In 1840 Clawson had 1,500 residents; by 1850 that number had increased to 4,000; by 1870 it had reached 10,000; and by 1900 it had reached 25,000 people.

During World War II there was significant growth in the city as Ford Motor Company established plants here to produce tanks and other military vehicles for use overseas. After World War II ended there was another surge in population as many veterans settled down here and started families.

Today Clawson continues to grow rapidly due to its close proximity to Detroit (just 20 miles away), excellent schools (including two charter schools), low crime rates (especially compared to some larger cities), ample recreational opportunities (including numerous golf courses) and easy access to major highways (I-75/M-10). There are also plans underway for additional development around the city center which should help drive even more growth in coming years!
