The city was founded in 1825 and named for Ebenezer Eaton, a pioneer settler. The city's economy is based on manufacturing, health care, education and tourism. Manufacturing includes automotive parts and components, medical equipment and supplies, food processing plants and other industrial products. Tourism includes attractions such as the Dow Chemical Company Plant Tour Park (a former chemical plant), the Apple Blossom Festival (the world's largest apple festival), the Historic Downtown district with its Victorian architecture and numerous shops and restaurants, as well as nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
