Foster City is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 31,521. Foster City is adjacent to Menlo Park and Atherton, both located within the San Francisco Bay Area.

Foster City was founded in 1952 by William Dickson and his wife Marguerite as a planned community named after their son, Bill Foster. The original goal was for 1,000 families to live there. As of February 2011, there were 3,171 housing units at an average density of 3 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of Foster City was 71% white (non-Hispanic), 14% Asian (mostly Chinese), 2% black or African American, 0.3% Native American or Pacific Islander, 5% from other races and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people constituted 16%.
