Marine City, MI

Marine City is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Monroe County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 21,812. The city is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and is adjacent to Port Huron, MI. Marine City was founded in 1835 by settlers from Monroe County who were attracted to its location on the lake and its proximity to Port Huron. The city's name comes from an incident in which a group of local Native Americans attempted to steal a boatload of goods from one of the early settlers. The locals responded by shooting at them, thus "marining" them on land for future retribution.

Today, Marine City is home to several businesses that are related to maritime commerce or provide support services for these businesses, such as shipbuilding and repair facilities, marine insurance companies, shipping agents and freight forwarders. These businesses have helped make Marine City one of the most prosperous cities in Michigan with an annual median household income that exceeds $75,000. In addition to its prosperous economy, Marine City also enjoys excellent public schools and numerous recreational opportunities including fishing tournaments on Lake Michigan as well as golf courses and beaches close by.
