Marine City is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Monroe County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 21,812. The city is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and is adjacent to Port Huron, MI. Marine City was founded in 1835 by settlers from Monroe County who were attracted to its location on the lake and its proximity to Port Huron. The city's name comes from an incident in which a group of local Native Americans attempted to steal a boatload of goods from one of the early settlers. The locals responded by shooting at them, thus "marining" them on land for future retribution.
