Menominee, MI

The Menominee Indian Reservation is located in the northeast corner of Michigan. The reservation has a land area of 1,854 square miles and a population of 10,000 people. The Menominee Tribe is one of the federally recognized tribes in Michigan.

The Menominee Tribe was first settled in the early 1800s by members of the Ottawa and Chippewa tribes. In 1837, the tribe signed a treaty with the United States government that allowed them to live on their reservation and hunt and fish in accordance with their traditional way of life. In 1855, Congress passed a law that allowed the tribe to sell goods and services to white settlers on their reservation.

Today, most tribal members are employed by businesses located on or near the reservation. The tribe operates its own schools, hospitals, police department, casino, golf course and other businesses. Tribal members also work as firefighters and paramedics for local municipalities throughout Michigan.
