Southfield is a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. The population was 129,911 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Southfield Town Center shopping mall and the Ford Field football stadium.

The area that now comprises Southfield was first settled in 1818 by Moses Cleaveland and his family. Cleaveland named the settlement after his home town in England, Southfield. In 1835, the village of Southfield was incorporated as a city with a population of 1,000 people. The city's growth accelerated with the arrival of the railroad in 1857 and grew rapidly until it reached its peak in 1920 with a population of over 60,000 people. However, due to suburbanization following World War II and increasing automobile ownership, the city's population declined steadily until reaching its current level.

Today, Southfield is an affluent suburb characterized by well-maintained homes and neighborhoods on large lots. The community has many amenities including parks, churches, schools and shopping centers. Home prices are high relative to incomes but there is considerable demand for housing due to its close proximity to Detroit and excellent public transportation options including both rail and bus lines which make commuting into downtown Detroit easy.
