Minnesota State Highway 95 and Minnesota State Highway 169 are two of the main routes in and out of Jackson. Interstate 35W passes through the southern part of Jackson but does not have an exit within the city limits; I-35E does have an exit within city limits but leads to downtown Minneapolis rather than Jackson itself (the closest exit being Exit 219). U .S . Route 61 also runs through Jackson as it makes its way from St Paul to Fargo while U .S . Route 52 traverses through central Jackson before continuing on to Hastings and Alexandria in southern Minnesota respectively

The Mississippi River forms much of the eastern border of Jackson while its namesake river forms most of its western border with Iowa Township lying just across the river from town on Iowa's east bank The White Earth Indian Reservation occupies much land along both banks The nearest airport is Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport which is about away in Bloomington

The earliest inhabitants were likely nomadic Paleo-Indians who hunted large game such as bison over thousands of years as they migrated across North America according to archaeological evidence found near present day downtown Jackson By AD 1000, people had started settling along both banks of what would become known as Lake Minnetonka where they built small villages that would eventually grow into larger townships over time including what are now known as Eden Prairie, Hopkins and Brooklyn Park In 1851, when Hennepin County was created from Ramsey County, one township that made up part of Eden Prairie was named after Andrew Jackson who had recently been elected president of the United States  This township became known as Andrew Johnson Township after President Johnson who served only one term before being impeached by Congress and removed from office  in 1868 In 1870 another township was formed out of Andrew Johnson Township which took its name from General Ulysses S Grant who had just won victory against Confederate General Robert E Lee at Vicksburg Mississippi thereby ending America's Civil War for good
