Lowry is a small town located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Lowry is located at 44°5′14″N 93°1′59″W / 44.083111°N 93.022222°W / 44.083111; -93.022222 (44.083118, -93.023444). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), all of it land.[2]
The first settlers arrived in Lowry in 1854 and established a small farmstead on what is now known as Main Street.[3] The town began to grow rapidly after the arrival of the railroad in 1881 and by 1890 had reached its present size with a population of 350 people.[4] The growth of Lowry was due in part to its location on Highway 10 which served as an important transportation corridor linking Minneapolis and Saint Paul with points westward.[5]
Today, Lowry remains a small town characterized by its close-knit community spirit and strong sense of tradition.[6] The main economic activity in Lowry is agriculture which accounts for approximately 60% of the workforce[7] while retail and services account for about 40% each.[8] The town's primary industry is poultry production although there are also several businesses involved in manufacturing and distribution.[9]
Real estate in Lowry consists primarily of single family homes although there are also some duplexes and apartments available for purchase or rent.[10] Median home prices range from $130,000 to $225,000[11] while median rental prices hover around $700 per month[12]. There are currently no new construction projects underway within the town limits but there are several existing homes that are being renovated or upgraded[13].
