Madison is a city located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 58,834. Madison is the capital of the state of Wisconsin and the largest city in Wisconsin. The city is located on both banks of the Madison River and is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Madison was founded on June 1, 1836 by John C. Calhoun and James W. Blackstone as a port town on Lake Mendota to compete with Portage, two miles upriver on the Wisconsin River. The founders named it for James Madison, fourth President of the United States (1809-1817). The first buildings were constructed near where State Street crosses from Monroe Street (now called Capitol Square) to Main Street (now called State Street). In 1839 Madison became county seat of Dane County when its population reached 4500.
