Monticello is a small town located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County.

The first settlers arrived in 1855 and named the town after Monticello, Virginia, the home of Thomas Jefferson. The town was platted by A.W. Kempton and J.W. Clements and named for Monticello because it was near a railroad line that ran through the area. The first business in Monticello was a general store operated by James Waddell and his son-in-law, A.J. Brownlee. In 1872, Jens Christian Andersen opened a candy store on Main Street which became one of the town's most popular businesses for over fifty years.
