The town was founded in 1856 and named for the pine trees that grew near the original settlement site. The first post office opened in 1857 and was called Pine Grove. In 1875, it was renamed Pine City after a local hotel owner donated land for a city hall and fire department. The first school opened in 1870 and the town's first newspaper, the Pine City Enterprise, began publication in 1880.
