Moorhead is a city located in Moorhead County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 36,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Moorhead County. The city is named after Henry Mower Moorhead, a railroad official and Minnesota politician who served as Governor of Minnesota from 1862 to 1868.

The area that would become Moorhead was first settled in 1858 by John Fergus and his family. The town was platted in 1872 and named for Henry Mower Moorhead, then the president of the Minneapolis & St. Paul Railroad. A post office has been in operation at Moorhead since 1872.

Moorhead's economy is based on agriculture (primarily corn), manufacturing (particularly machinery and transportation equipment), education (especially its two universities: Concordia University- Moorhead and St Cloud State University), health care (including Mayo Clinic Health System), tourism (due to its location near several lakes) and government services (including federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture). In addition to its namesake industry, food processing plays an important role in the local economy with companies such as General Mills operating facilities within city limits.

The city has experienced steady growth over the past few decades due to its many amenities and favorable economic conditions. According to Forbes magazine, Moorhead ranks No. 8 on their list of "America's Best Places for Business". This success has led to increased demand for housing which has put pressure on both the availability and cost of real estate within the city limits.

Real estate prices vary greatly depending on location within Moorhead but are generally higher than average rates found throughout Minnesota or nationally; median home prices were $128,000 in 2016 according to Zillow data . Despite this high price tag however, homeownership rates remain high with nearly 70% of households owning their homes according to Census data . There are several factors that have contributed to this trend including low interest rates, strong job market prospects and limited supply of properties available for purchase or lease . As a result of these factors along with increasing student enrollment at both Concordia University- Moorhead and St Cloud State University , demand for rental properties has also increased significantly over recent years . In fact , according to Apartment List data , vacancy rates have decreased considerably over recent years but remain relatively high when compared with other major metropolitan areas across America . This combination of high demand coupled with limited supply has resulted in significant increases in rents across all types of property within MoorHEAD – from single family homes to apartments – over recent years . While some people may see this trend as negative – citing skyrocketing costs as a barrier preventing them from accessing affordable housing – others argue that it provides incentives for developers to build more units specifically catering towards renters rather than selling off existing properties into private hands . Either way , it remains an ongoing issue that will likely continue to affect housing affordability within MoorHEAD for years to come .
