Edina is a town located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 33,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Edina was founded in 1868 and named for Edina, Minnesota. The town was originally built on the site of a former mill village on the Osage River. The first buildings were erected in 1869 and by 1870 there were about 200 people living in Edina. In 1875, the railroad came to Edina and it began to grow rapidly as a result; by 1880 there were 1,500 people living in Edina and by 1890 it had reached 4,000 residents. By 1900 there were 10,000 people living in Edina and by 1910 it had grown to 25,000 residents.
The growth of Edina was due to its location close to major transportation routes; the town was located just north of downtown St. Louis and just south of Union Station which made it easy for people to get around town. Additionally, many businesses that are now common throughout St. Louis started out as small businesses in Edina; examples include K-Mart (which opened its first store in 1966), JCPenney (which opened its first store in 1962), Sears (which opened its first store in 1902), and Walgreens (which opened its first store in 1962).
Today, much of what makes Edina unique has remained unchanged; the town retains its character as a mill village with narrow streets lined with Victorian-style homes that date back to the early 1800s; moreover, many businesses that were once local have since expanded nationwide including K-Mart (now an international chain with over 2,500 stores across America), JCPenney (now a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation with over 1,100 stores across America), Sears (now an affiliate of Macy's Inc., with over 700 stores across America), and Walgreens (now one of the largest pharmacy chains in America with over 2200 stores across America).
