Fremont is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 29,971. Fremont is considered part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and is included in the St. Louis–St. Charles– Farmington, MO-IL Combined Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1819 by John C. Frémont and named after Colonel John Fremont, an American military hero who explored much of the Western United States during the early 1800s. The city's namesake played a significant role in its early development as a transportation hub for goods and people between St. Louis and points westward along the Santa Fe Trail and other routes of travel during that era; Fremont served as one terminus point on what became known as "The Main Line."
