Hallsville is a small town located in the southwestern corner of St. Louis County, Missouri. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bridgeton, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The town was founded in 1857 and named for James Hall, a local landowner. The first business in Hallsville was a general store operated by James and John Hallett. In 1859, J.D. Wood opened a hotel which served as the community's main lodging facility until 1886 when the current hotel was built by A.C. and Lillie Browning. Wood's Hotel continued to operate until 1971 when it closed due to declining patronage and competition from larger hotels in nearby towns such as Bridgeton and Florissant .
Today, Hallsville is home to several businesses including a grocery store, gas station/convenience store, two restaurants (one of which is open 24 hours), two banks (one of which is locally owned), post office, library (with an extensive lending collection), hardware store/garden center, barber shop/beauty salon and several small businesses including an auto body shop and an insurance agency .
Hallsville has experienced steady growth over the past few decades due to its location near major highways (I-44 and I-70) as well as its proximity to St Louis Lambert International Airport . As a result of this growth , many new homes have been built in Hallsville over the past few years .
