Chatham is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,821,[1][2] reflecting an increase of 651 (+5.3%) from the 9,724 counted in the 2000 Census,[3] which had in turn increased by 1,906 (+10.0%) from the 8,492 counted in the 1990 Census.[4]

Chatham was incorporated as a borough on March 3, 1894,[5] from portions of Morristown Township and Netcong Township.[6][7][8] The borough derives its name from Chatham House (now part of Chatham University), which served as a summer home for George Washington and his wife Martha Washington during their visits to New Jersey.[9][10][11]

The Borough Hall at 5 South Main Street houses municipal offices and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[12] The Morris County Historical Society Museum is located at 2 South Broad Street.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Chatham has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.1 km2), all land.[13]
