Elmer, NJ

Elmer is a small town located in Morris County, New Jersey. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Morristown-Beardstown, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town was founded in 1792 and named for Elmer Freeman, an early settler. The first settlers were Quakers from Pennsylvania who purchased land from the Lenni Lenape Indians. The town grew slowly until the late 1800s when it began to experience rapid growth as a result of its location on the Morris and Passaic Railroad. By 1900, Elmer had a population of 1,500 and by 1910 it had reached 3,000.

Today, Elmer is still primarily a residential community with a small commercial center located along Route 23 near the junction with Route 202. The majority of homes are single-family dwellings although there are some multi-unit buildings present as well. There are also a number of churches and civic organizations present in Elmer which contribute to its strong sense of community spirit.

Real estate in Elmer is generally priced lower than that found in more affluent communities such as Morristown or Paramus but it does not lack for amenities either. Residents enjoy access to excellent schools including Morris Catholic High School which has been ranked among the top high schools in New Jersey numerous times over the past several years. There are also plenty of recreational opportunities available including hiking trails and lakes within close proximity to town which make it easy for residents to get out and enjoy nature without having to travel too far away from home.
