Hillsborough is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 8,972,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 514 (+5.2%) from the 8,527 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 1,711 (+15.1%) from the 7,269 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]
The borough was formed on March 11, 1894,[12] from portions of Morristown Township and Hillsborough Township.[13][14] The borough's name derives from its location atop hills overlooking Passaic River.[15][16][17]
According to the United States Census Bureau, Hillsborough has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.3 km2), all of it land.[18]
As of the census[19] of 2000, there were 8,527 people, 3,359 households and 2,386 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,644.4 people per square mile (1,025.6/km²). There were 3,584 housing units at an average density of 906.4 per square mile (349.8/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.92% White , 0.53% African American , 0.09% Native American , 0 .24% Asian , 0 .02% Pacific Islander , 0 .48% from other races , and 1 .30% from two or more races . Hispanic or Latino Of any race were 2 .01%.
