Kearny is a borough in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,811,[9][10] reflecting an increase of 1,527 (+19.2%) from the 9,721 counted in the 2000 Census,[18] which had in turn increased by 2,853 (+36.4%) from the 6,783 counted in the 1990 Census.[19]

The borough was formed on April 4, 1894 as part of an act sponsored by then-Governor George F. Schofield.[20] Kearny is named for Judge Stephen Watts Kearny who served on the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1836 to 1841 and later became Governor of New Mexico Territory.[21][22][23] The town was initially known as "Wattsville" after its founder,[24][25] but changed its name to Kearny after Judge Kearny's death.[26][27]
